Each bite is a delightful combination of soft tofu and bold seasoning, making it a standout dish for tofu lovers and skeptics alike.

For a complete meal, serve this dish with steamed rice and a side of Spicy Cucumber Salad.

Nutritional Attributes:

Silken tofu is a nutritious addition to any diet, providing a good source of plant-based protein, essential amino acids, and minerals like calcium and iron.

Additionally, the soy-based sauce adds depth of flavor without excess calories or unhealthy fats, making this dish both satisfying and wholesome.

How to make Silken Tofu:

  1. Prepare Tofu:
    • Carefully drain silken tofu and transfer it onto a plate.
  2. Make Sauce:
    • In a bowl, mix together light soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, chili garlic oil, sesame oil, sliced scallion, and black sesame seeds until well combined.
  3. Garnish and Serve:
    • Pour the prepared sauce over the tofu, ensuring even coverage.
    • Sprinkle additional sliced scallions and sesame seeds for garnish.
    • Serve immediately as a delightful appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients & Alternatives:

Main ingredients:

  • Tofu: Use soft/silken tofu for this recipe. This tofu provides a creamy and delicate texture, rich in protein and essential nutrients.

Sauce:

  • Light Soy Sauce: Adds savory umami flavor to the sauce and enhances the overall taste.
  • Brown Sugar: Provides a hint of sweetness to balance the savory and spicy flavors.
  • Garlic: Fresh minced garlic adds aromatic flavor and depth to the dish, enhancing its overall taste profile.
  • Chili Garlic Oil: Infuses the sauce with heat and adds complexity to the flavor profile.
Alternative: Make your own by combining minced garlic with red pepper flakes in vegetable oil, or use store-bought chili oil for convenience.
  • Sesame Oil: Imparts a nutty aroma and enhances the overall richness of the sauce.
  • Scallions: Adds freshness, color, and a mild onion flavor to the sauce.
  • Sesame Seeds: Provides a crunchy texture and nutty flavor to the dish. I am using a mix of both white and black sesame seeds for this dish.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Use fresh garlic for maximum flavor in the sauce.
  • Gently remove tofu from packaging to prevent breakage.
  • Adjust the amount of chili garlic oil according to your preferred level of spiciness.

FAQ:

Is there a substitute for chili garlic oil?

If you don’t have chili garlic oil, you can use regular chili oil or add a pinch of red pepper flakes to regular oil for a similar spicy kick.

Can I make the sauce in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Just make sure to give it a good stir before pouring it over the tofu as the ingredients may settle.

Can I use film tofu instead of silken tofu?

While silken tofu is preferred for its delicate texture, you can use firm tofu if that’s what you have on hand. Just be aware that the texture will be different.
